In May, Light House Sustainability Society published A Second Life for Canada’s Homes, a federally funded study we partnered on that tests whether the home relocation and repurposing model we built at Renewal Development can work as an affordable, scalable housing strategy in Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Hamilton, Toronto and Ottawa. The answer: technically feasible in all seven cities, 20-30% more cost-effective than new construction or modular housing like for like, and a share of the 90,000 high-value homes headed for demolition this decade redirected to communities that need them.
